We live in an age that highly values personal freedom.
The motto of our age could be: “Everyone did as they saw fit”
Interestingly, those are the closing words of the book of Judges which describes a period in Israel’s history when there was no king and moral anarchy ensued.
The book of 1 Samuel is presented as a solution to that problem and tells the story of the first kings of Israel, Saul and David, who are anointed by the prophet Samuel.
It is a book that teaches us
i) Why we need a king
ii) What sort of king we need (ultimately pointing us to the Lord Jesus)
iii) What it means to follow Jesus as king in the midst of an age that prizes personal freedom
